I'm saddened to learn of Larry's passing today. I was attempting to reach him by email this morning to wish him a happy birthday and his email on the FCC database bounced. I googled "Larry Stein N2LS Jackson NJ" and was led to this site. Larry was such a pioneer in the retail computing business. I was not only a customer, but a friend. Our connection through amateur radio brought us together and created a bond that those in our fraternity will understand. When he created his business, he named it Prodigy. It was very successful! He not only provided computers but also software applications to make them worthwhile to own! I was working for a Lawrenceville software firm and was sent to NY for a project that was a joint collaboration among Sears, IBM and Trintex. They apparently didn't know (or care?) that the name they planned to use -- Prodigy -- had already been taken. I reported their plans to Larry who reportedly negotiated a deal to be compensated for the use of the name! Larry, now that your key has gone silent, I hope your family will always remember you as the genius you were. I know I will. 73, N2LS DE N2GJ ABQ NM USA SK

I got my first job at what was then The Computer Mart of New Jersey. I remember Larry very well and owe him a huge debt for the opportunity he gave me there.
Especially after my (well-intentioned) mistakes. Once I was painting the basement next door where things were stored and since I had some paint left over I decided to paint the old metal ramp down to the lower level. I forgot to block it off and when my back was turned Larry's father Abe came walking in carrying a box of files. Of course as soon as he stepped on the still-wet ramp his feet went out from under him and he fell. I was mortified and trembling when Gladys and Larry came running over. Thankfully Abe was bruised but okay. They didn't get mad at me and fire me for being so clueless.
I was lucky to have exchanged a few emails with Larry a few years ago, remembering the store and the business. I was very sorry to hear of his passing because we planned to talk again after he was feeling better.
He was one of those very good ones and he'll be greatly missed.

Larry first entered my life when I shopped at his Computer Store in Princeton, many years ago. When I moved into Four Seasons and met him again we began to build a friendship. He was a building block of our community. I was lucky to work alongside of him on creation of our WebSite, his involvement on our Newspaper, and as a co-member in the CERT COMMITTEE where he volunteered his time for the handicapped members of the community
I so admired his vast knowledge of computers.
His presence will be missed, but he will always be remembered for his never ending involvement…

I have so many positive memories of Larry from the time I was just a kid growing up across the street from the Stein family. He was like a second dad to me, and taught me so much about the importance of enjoying life, as well as the magic of technology and computers. He will be dearly missed, and I know I speak for my entire family. -Andrew Darlow and family
