I don't know where to begin to tell you about Wally … except to say that he was a very special man and loved and respected by all who knew him. You could always depend upon Wally. He would never let you down if you needed him and he would never refuse anyone a favor or to lend a helping hand. And he could fix everything from a broken radio to a broken heart, no matter how difficult or time consuming it might be. He never gave up on something he started and never disappointed anyone. Wally was a quite gentle man. A big guy with a big heart. Very kind and very generous. All the neighbors loved him, all the little kids followed him around, as well as all the dogs and cats in the neighborhood. I am told that even the seagulls knew him and would come to visit him on the ferry since he shared his lunch with them and often brought them a tasty snacks of leftovers from home. No animals would go hungry if Wally was around. Although Wally left school to join the Navy and serve his country, he was one of the smartest men I know. He read a lot of educational magazines and was very fond of documentaries and public television. He could always tell you about something new and interesting when you visited with him and no one knew more than him about classic movies! His knowledge and enthusiasm turned everyone he came in contact with into a movie fan as well. Wally loved ships and the sea and might have lived a life of travel and adventure, but when he met and fell in love at first sight with Marie, his wife and companion for over 50 years, he left all that behind and dedicated his life to love and provide for his family, which I have been fortunate enough to be part of. I am so proud to be Wally's daughter and thankful for the things he taught me about life, and the gentle spirit he instilled in his children and grandchildren. I think we all have a little bit of Wally in us and he will live in our hearts forever. With love from Cathie, his daughter.

He was a true gentleman, a man of honor, a World War II Navy veteran, and family man. And he always had a smile and a great story to tell.- From his happy times growing up in Brooklyn, his adventures in the Navy, and the time he spent in Newfoundland, he would tell us amazing stories and we never got tired of hearing them.
He knew everything about the movies, the movie stars , famous directors, the behind the scenes stories, and he influenced us all to appreciate the classics of TCM- his favorite station..From Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland to Gene Kelly and Errol Flynn we would watch the movies together and he would fill us in all the details.
He was every dog's best friend and had a pup at each elbow whenever he sat down for Sunday dinner. They knew they could always count on him for a little snack and a pat on the head. When I was a kid I thought he had a magical power to secretly talk to the animals because everyone's dog loved him best. But it was his kind and gentle nature that drew them to him.
I found it amazing to see that this kindness and thoughtfulness had remained with him even through his many years of illness and decline from Alzheimer's disease. He never complained and had remained a gentleman to the end. He was always ready with his quick smile and a joke and could make us laugh with his funny comments even through the most difficult times.
Love, Mary Ann

How lucky I was to have a big brother like Wally. Wally and Marie lived right next door to us growing up. I have never met a gentler soul than Wally and have not known many couples as happy together as Marie and Wally were. I miss Wally's funny stories and Wally's singing Clear, Cool Water with his friend Leo on New Years Eve. Our is a great loss but Heaven has gained a great angel. I am sure he is with Marie, Mom (Nanny B) and Doris. Wally my Hero and Friend. Love you - Marilyn

To Uncle Wally- You have always been larger than life to us, and remain so now. May you find safe passage to Heaven-where Aunt Marie and Jimmy wait for you. “Where cares and sorrows are no more, but all is peace and joy.”

Important things that I learned from my grandfather Wallace Barnes: Use your talents in whatever you do. Be proud of the responsibilities that you are entrusted with. Show kindness and patience towards those unable to protect themselves, especially animals. Use your ingenuity, as necessity is the mother of invention. When driving, be observant (then still look again). The world is full of interesting and amazing things, never stop wanting to learn about them. Stockpile all of your favorite films, hopefully you will have a chance to revisit the classics. And finally, all the words to the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Rabbit of Seville"

Uncle Wally You leave us with such beautiful memories of listening to you play the harmonica on the hammock upstate. You were such a peaceful man who was loved by all. You are with Aunt Marie now dancing to the most beautiful music. "In one of the stars I shall be living In one of them I shall be laughing And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing when you look at the sky at night~~" Forever in our hearts, Ann Marie, Julie and family...We love you
