Obituary of Dr. Carl Louis Murray, Jr.
Dr. Carl Louis Murray, Jr., 71, of Manalapan, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at home. Carl was born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Carl Louis Murray, Sr. and Lillie Murray Rawlerson (nee Bateman) on June 3, 1953.
Carl met and married the late Vera Modeste Murray June 1990. He loved her dearly and was devoted to her until she succumbed to an auto-immune disease September 10, 2007. Two years later, Carl met the second love of his life, Lisa Maria Jackson and the two were united in holy matrimony on November 27, 2009. Lisa was very devoted to Carl until his death.
As a child, his mother Lillie recognized his intelligence and zest for reading at a very early age. He was reading by the age of 3. She felt the need to foster his mind by enrolling him into the Newark parochial school system, where he flourished.
Carl attended the prestigious St. Benedicts Preparatory High School in Newark, New Jersey, where he graduated with honors. He matriculated at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts for undergraduate studies in Chemistry. During the summer of his senior year, he received an early acceptance into medical school from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Carl made the decision to begin his medical studies immediately that fall.
Carl received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from UMDNJ and began interning in the Internal Medicine/Neurology area at the same hospital. He then moved his medical residency to St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, NJ where he subsequently became Chief Resident in the Neurology Department.
Following his residency at St. Michaels, Carl became very interested in the field of Oncology. His interest led him to be awarded an Oncology Fellowship at Newark Beth Isreal Hospital, by the late Dr. Frederick B. Cohen. It should be noted that he was the first doctor at that time to receive this Fellowship.
Carl was a kind and compassionate doctor to all his patients and those whom he worked with. This is evident by the award he received in 1994 by the Visiting Nurses Association as the Physician of the Year for Central New Jersey.
Carl worked with several medical practices prior to opening his own practice, Synergy Medical Services in Old Bridge, NJ. Carl also served as the Medical Director at the Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice in Edison, NJ.
In November 2015, Carl had developed heart issues that resulted in him ultimately needing a heart transplant. Thankfully, on March 3, 2016, Carl received a new heart. His recovery was miraculous to say the least. Carl was able to continue helping others until his health caused him to significantly reduce his workload.
Carl was predeceased by his father Carl Louis Murray, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife Lisa Maria Jackson; daughter J. Brianne Daul (Eamon) of Schooley’s Mountain, NJ; his mother Lillie Murray Rawlerson of East Orange, NJ; devoted uncle Frank Murray of Manchester, NJ; sisters Diane Murray of East Orange, NJ and Darlene Williams (Daniel) of Burgaw, NC; mother-in-law Diane Toomer of Parlin, NJ; brother-in-law David Toomer of Old Bridge; three grandchildren Sophie Reagan, Declan Louis and Kieran George Daul; two nephews Daniel Williams (Andrea) of Newark, NJ and Julius Sheppard (Quraishia) of Washington, D.C. and a host of cousins and friends.
