I met gorgeous, graceful Francesca when I was 11, shortly after me and Tammy became instant best friends that first day of 7th grade in the Seth Low schoolyard.
It wasn't long before I became part of their beautiful, close family. She was Mrs. D'Angelo and I was Pat, but she was more like a second mom. Warm and welcoming, the D'Angelos generously fed me lunch every day during the 7th grade and most of 8th grade too. I'm happy I got the chance to thank her for that fairly recently as an adult and so very sad that I didn't spend more time with her during this part of our lives.
There were birthday parties and sleepovers and the famous apple-picking outing...wonderful childhood memories that I continue to carry with me regardless of distance and time. A lot of them are food-related, my first taste of tuna in Italian olive oil. Salumeria-quality cold cuts on the freshest Italian bread baked in Bensonhurst. A cupboard filled with Drake's cakes and Hostess goodies, and very few food rules. It was glorious!
I just loved being there and I will always remember her smiling, happy, beautiful face! And although I probably couldn't articulate this then, there was this stong sense of home and family and hard work, of love and stability, qualities you could see were important to both of Tammy's parents.
Rest in peace, Francesca, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. It was a privelege to know you and thank you for being such a big part of my young life. Your spirit lives on through your daughters and grandchildren, and every single person you touched with your warmth and beauty.
Love always,
Tricia "Pat" Karsay
