My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Lykes family during this time. Coach Lykes was an unforgettable person and track coach. I had the honor of having him coach me throughout high school and owe him for my passion to the sport. He knew everything about the proper form and technique and taught me drills and workouts for jumps and hurdles that I’ve since used coaching high school students myself. He always made practices fun and knew what to say when we were having a bad day. His time and dedication will be remembered and passed down through the generations of athletes he coached.

Coach Lykes was always there to support all of us runners during Cross Country practices and meets. He always managed to help motivate everyone at Holmdel Park in the summer heat of a July practice or during tempo runs at Lake Topanemus. I will always remember his witty jokes, his honest life advice, and love he had for the sport. My heart goes out to his loved ones and family during this difficult time. He helped mold so many young people into the driven adults they are today.

My prayers are with the Lykes family during this difficult time. I am incredibly grateful for Coach Lykes' kind patience as a track coach and mentor. I vividly remember how he spent countless practices with us in the rain and snow to ensure we had the support and encouragement to do our best. Coach Lykes brought wisdom and know-how but also a witty sense of humor that never failed to brighten my day. He will be deeply missed and as one of his athletes, I will always remember the imprint he left on our team as a coach and leader.

My thoughts are with the Lykes family at this time. Coach Lykes was an amazing track coach and coached me in high jump throughout my four years of high school. He allowed me to believe in myself and always assured me that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. I'm going to miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Lykes family during this time. I feel incredibly lucky to have had Coach Lykes as a coach and mentor at Colts Neck High School. His loving nature, kind words of encouragement, and challenging 400m hurdle workouts are something I have carried with me into my own life as a teacher and coach. I owe so much of my success in high school and college track to him. He will be deeply missed.
With gratitude,

Our thoughts and prayers are with Diane, Jaime, Stephen and Tommy during this most difficult time. We loved all the BBQs on Fourth of July! Kevin enjoyed working with his uncle in his construction company. I know he will be truly missed but is now at peace. Love to all of our New Jersey family hurting at this time. We love you. Nancy, Kevin and family.

Thank you, coach, for memories around the oval that will last a lifetime. You are and will forever be a component of my foundation and each day I’m so grateful for all running has provided to me. Thank you for being one of the best hugs and ears to listen - on days we celebrated, but more importantly on the tough days.
Forever thankful

My sincerest condolences to the entire Lykes family. In our 15+ years of coaching track together at Colts Neck, Joe left an indelible mark on me. His passion for coaching/getting the most out of kids was second to none and was surpassed only by his knowledge of the sport. The man was a walking encyclopedia of form, technique and drills. Since he retired, he has been missed by all of us here, but his memory lives on in the winning tradition of the track and field teams.
