I’m not sure what I can add, but here are some personal memories.
I often felt a special connection with mom, a sense that she believed in me. Of course, I didn’t recognize this for a good long time. Looking back, both of us had a thing for crosswords, jigsaws, and Jeopardy! She inspired me to be a life-long learner, and during and after university graduation, I would spend many 100’s of extra hours in the libraries at Rutgers and Princeton, and the local library in Hillsborough NJ.
But with the good, there’s also more stressful times. Being a mom entails a certain amount of stress. OK, a huuuge amount of stress. I do remember that time when mom needed to recruit a neighbor to drive me to the hospital. On a Sunday night. In the middle of a snowstorm. I do remember how beautiful the snow crashing against the windshield was, before presumably passing out, because I remembered nothing else about that night. And many nights afterwards, it seems.
But stressing over children doesn’t abate, even after many years. When current events went down in Ukraine in 2022, mom asked when I would be returning home. But after you’ve been living somewhere for more than 15 years, that does become that place you call home. Maybe to a mom’s regret.
In closing, I would like to send special thanks to Ginny and Louise for taking mom into their homes after she left the care facility. Although I’m sure it was a labor of love, it was still time and effort on their part. Thanks for all you did for mom during her final years. It is appreciated.
