Obituary of Jessica Sand

Jessica Sand, 81, of Marlboro, NJ, passed away on September 25, 2023 after a brief and unexpected illness. She was born on January 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Herbert and Florence Potell.

Tough in spirit, but generous at heart, Jessica dedicated her life to education and served as a biology professor at several colleges before becoming tenured faculty at Union County College where she worked for more than 30 years. She was a devoted teacher who was a respected and beloved member of the academic community. She left an indelible impact on the lives of her students, many of whom became nurses and medical professionals.

A renaissance woman, Jessica was an avid reader and a frequent patron of the theater, ballet, symphony, and museums. She loved to garden, cook, and was a master knitter. She valued intelligence and integrity and was a fierce believer in truth, justice, and equal opportunity.

Jessica's family was of utmost importance to her. If you shared a meal with her, you were considered family and she would do anything for family. Jessica is survived by her daughters, Shara Sand and Tamara Shaw (Andrew), and her grandchildren, Spencer Gordon-Sand, Noah Lee, and Ezra Lee. She also leaves behind her sister, Lydia Winderman, and brother-in-law, Gary Winderman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 29, at 11:00 am at Freeman Manalapan Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to be made in her name to Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union, organizations that held special meaning to Jessica and her dedication to social justice.
