Obituary of Dorothy A. Roth Schroeder

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dorothy A. Roth-Schroeder, age 92, of Freehold, passed away on Tuesday June 27, 2023 at Jersey Shore Medical Center. She was born Dorothy A. Walter in New York City to William and Rae Walter.  She lived there until moving to Freehold in 1968 with her husband John W. Roth, where she raised her family and where she called home until her recent passing. Dorothy helped launch John's business, Central Claims Service, when they moved to Freehold and once established, she went to work as an Executive Secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Freehold Regional High School District until she retired.  Later, when her children were grown, she also worked as a secretary at the Freehold Psychology Group, wanting to be in an environment that helped people. With the utmost compassion, Dorothy's door and house were always open to anyone in need. No one had a bigger heart. She loved animals and had a particular passion for dogs, especially Weimaraners and her beloved Misty, Helga and Ashley.  She also groomed dogs for many years. Dorothy was never one to sit still, whether working, gardening, traveling, exercising, doing domestic chores or helping people or animals; she was always on the move.

After Dorothy's husband John W. passed away (December 7, 1975), she later married Manfred F. Schroeder (July 3, 1982). Dorothy loved to travel, and Manfred, who predeceased her (February 15, 2015), gave her the gift of travel to see the world. In addition to both her husbands, Dorothy was also predeceased by her brothers, Nathan John Walter and Peter Walter.  She is survived by her children, Karen Roth and John Roth (Caroline); her devoted grandchildren Mia Roth and John Spencer Roth; stepson Jeff Schroeder, as well as her many loving extended family members.

Dorothy was quite the athlete and a dedicated fan and participant in many sports through the years, including basketball, volleyball, handball, ice skating, bowling and golf.  Lesser known was Dorothy’s inherited love of boxing and wrestling from her father who trained her and she would occasionally flash her skills, if asked.  And, like her first husband John, she never wanted to miss a big horse race and would always enjoy an excursion out to watch the ponies.  Finally, she truly enjoyed and got comfort from baseball, especially the Dodgers and when those bums moved the Mets became her team for life.  Dorothy was a loving spouse, mother, sister, aunt and friend to so many. She is our hero.  She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
