CARL RONALD SCHERR

June 2, 1931 - June 24, 2023

Carl Ronald Scherr (92) of Manalapan NJ was born in Brooklyn NY in 1931. He passed away on June 24th at Centra State Hospital in Freehold NJ.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marguerite Reagan Scherr, his daughter Stephanie Scherr, of Fitzwilliam NH and daughter Jennifer Scherr Smigielski of Macungie PA. He has two grandchildren, Damon and Sara Smigielski.

Carl earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree and was retired from teaching Biology at Susan B. Wagner High School on Staten Island, NY. He was an avid Tin Can Sailor, a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He served on the U.S.S. Cogswell, DD 651. He wrote memories of his experiences in the Navy in the Tin Can Sailor newsletter and told enthusiastic tales of his travels and good times with those he served with during family gatherings. He told Navy stories as he drove on long road trips on annual summer vacations. He and his wife attended Tin Can Sailor reunions around the country, meeting other Navy veterans and visiting vessels. His entire extended family boarded the U.S.S. Cassin Young at the Boston National Historical Park, with him to hear about his time on board a similar ship. (Photo)

Carl Scherr vacationed widely with his family and with his wife, Marguerite. He was fascinated by visits to Israel, Russia and Egypt, but it was Hawaii and Italy that he fell in love with. He raised two enthusiastic travelers who take his scientific background and love of exploring to every new place they visit.

Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation from 10-1130am at the Freeman Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan, NJ, on Thursday, June 29th.
