Obituary of Flynn Raymond Jones

Please share a memory of Flynn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mr. Flynn Raymond Jones was born on July 10, 1946, in Rochester, New York, to the late Karl and Liolla Jones. He attended public school in Rochester where he played basketball and was elected Senior Class President, Madison High School where he graduated in 1965.

A lifelong scholar, Mr. Jones completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Mr. Jones' career path started at Eastman Kodak where he worked for 20 years. He started as a Chemist and then moved into Sales, winning several recognition awards for excellence. In the second chapter of his career, Mr. Jones decided to pursue teaching and earned his Master of Science in Education at Kean University. He worked for 10 years as an Honors Chemistry Teacher, enriching young minds at Marlboro Memorial Middle School, where he received the Governor's Teacher of the Year award.

Outside of his professional life, Mr. Jones was equally high achieving. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity for over 50 years, serving on the chapter leadership team for each state he resided in: New York, Indiana, and New Jersey. As a believer, he served in his local church as an usher and a member of the choir. He dedicated his deep bass voice to the Clinton Utterbach and the Praisers, and later on to the Faith Fellowship Choir. It was Mr. Jones' voice that led him to become a volunteer for the Association of the Blind as an Audiobook Narrator in Trenton, New Jersey. He also served as chair of the Boy Scout Troup 86 Committee. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones were dedicated to the advancement of minorities through education.

On June 5, 1976, Mr. Jones was united in holy matrimony to his beloved Sarah Lucille Jones in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Jones lived together in Rochester, New York, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, before settling in Marlboro, New Jersey, (where they shared a home for 42 years). Everything he did was in service to family and he was a caring and devoted husband for over 46 years until the day of his passing. Mr. Jones fathered two children, Nanette and Flynn Jr. He was passionate about his children with whom he shared his love of Christ and the importance of taking care of oneself so you can be there for others.

Those who knew Mr. Jones describe him as being a kind, loving soul who could fill a room with laughter while discussing "the old days", family, or his love of music. He was a deep thinker who was strong in his convictions yet open to hear other opinions. Mr. Jones was a strong man of God whose religious values were reflected in how he always kept true to his word.

Mr. Flynn Raymond Jones is predeceased by his father and mother, Mr. Karl and Liollia Jones, and his brothers Curtis Jones and Tyrone Jones. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Sarah Lucille Jones of Marlboro, New Jersey; one sister Roxanne Heath of Rochester, New York; one daughter Nanette Austad of Oklee, Minnesota; one son Flynn Jones Jr. of Daly City, California; five granddaughters: Meridian Broussard of Anderson, Indiana, Erin, Adrian, and Lauren Jones of Minnesota, and Astra Jones of Daly City, California; one daughter-in-law, Evelyn Jones of Daly City, California, one son-in-law, Troy Austad of Oklee, Minnesota; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aril 25, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00am at EPIC Church International in Sayreville with a Funeral Service following at 11:00am at the church.  Interment will follow at Marlboro Memorial Cemetery in Marlboro Twp., NJ.  For directions or leave a message of condolence, please visit our website at www.freemanfunralhomes.com.
