I first met John the summer of 78. He had just graduated from boot camp at Parris Island. He arrived at the recruiter's office in Freehold in his dress greens looking sharp and seemingly proud to be a US Marine. I was there signing up and I never gave John another thought after that day. You see, we did not sign up on the buddy system but it was quite peculiar how things turnedout. I caught up to John after I completed boot camp in 29 Palms, and again in Kaneohe Bay. Do you know the odds? A kid from Howell and another from Freehold getting similar orders to attend electronics and air control school in California and then finishing well enough in our respective MOS classes to choose Hawaii as our duty stations? Btw, I did not know that John had gone to Hawaii until I got there about 3 months later. I believe God had these 2 Jersey Boys together to share in their adventure with each other. We were both part of the Marine Air Control Squadron-2. We eventually became roommates and shared similar interests. We liked playing sports. We were on the MACS-2 flag football Championship team in 81. We also were on the Championship softball team. We loved water skiing and snorkeling. We were two of the best foosball players in the squadron, and when teamed up, we were hard to defeat. John and I kept the cleanest two man room in the squadron, as our Major who inspected rooms weekly, was always handing us 96 hour passes for our effort. I have many great memories with John including blasting my stereo up real loud to our hometown hero, Bruuuuce. When we ended our service and made it back to the garden state, we would go riding on the "backstreets" in his 79 Z-29, which he was very proud of. I eventually moved away and having our own family, jobs, and such, we lost touch somewhat. I went to NJ on occasion and when I could reach John we would get together for a short visit. I did meet his parents on a couple occasions before their passing.
We were able to connect as roommates again last summer when we both attended our MACS reunion down in Beaufort, SC. We were able to attend a graduation ceremony at Parris Island and I drove us around the base taking in all of the nostalgia. We went shopping at the PX and took in some of the restaurants down there. It was nice spending some quality time with John again and in our discussions I know that he was a God fearing man. John was always kind and quite the gentleman. Although our plans of visiting each other later this year will not happen, I will cherish the good times that we had. I will miss my Marine Corps brother but he will remain in my thoughts and in my heart. My deepest condolences and prayer of comfort and peace go out to his two children, his grandchildren, his brother, and all other loved ones concerned. Semper Fi my brother until we meet again "Further on up the road". I'll catch up to you again when our Father calls me home.

One of our fondest memories of John was how proud he was of his family when they cooked a fantastic Portuguese Dinner at our Elks Lodge. It was truly a family affair with his parents Jose and Maria and John and Cindy cooking authentic Portuguese fare. It was very successful and everyone raved about the food.
In 2009-10 John was our Exalted Ruler, Cindy our First Lady and they both worked hard all through the year and great company for us during Rich’s year as District Deputy. Our condolences to his children Jonathan and Lauren and their families. God rest his soul, he will never be forgotten. Rich and Patty Hamilton
