I have never known a person with so much strenghth,courage and love as my cousin Mary. Her heavy wheel chair could never hold her beautiful spirit down. We were born the same year and grew up in a loud often crazy family. I think our family motto is " You're not the boss of me !" We shared candy,Teen Beat Magazines, sleep-overs and Sunday dinners at Grandma & Grandpa's in Brooklyn. I loved going around the block with her and our other cousins; into the apt.building courtyards, where we'd laugh and yell, just to hear our voices echoed back.
In recent years, we shared phone calls, a few lunches and a walk to the beach with ice cream. She loved her family most,her kittens and James Darren,who she met in Las Vegas. She loved hearing him sing and considered him a good friend. The first time she saw him in Vegas she was listening as he rehearsed for that nights performance and when he found her on the other side of the door , he invited her inside to watch. She enjoyed all of his performances over the years.
Joanne took on the big sister role and looked out for Mary in every way. She built her a beautiful apartment in her home in Mary's favorite color, purple. She's Mary's best friend.
The last time I saw my beautiful cousin she joked about having to always do things in a big way... having not just one but two operations in the same week.
My heart is broken for all Mary went through in her life and for her young passing. I imagine in heaven that Mary is running, skipping and dancing with Aunt Ann, Uncle Dom, Phillip, Richard, Michael, Ann Marie, grandma, grandpa, my mom and all of our relatives who are on the other side.I will miss you.... I love you Mary.
