Edward Christian Nyland Sr., 89, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2014 after a short stay at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, NJ. He was born on August 24, 1925 to Albert and Johanna (Van Beveren) Nyland in Clifton, New Jersey. On June 14, 1947, he married Doris Mae Sitgreaves in Nutley, New Jersey and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. They lived in Clifton, then Toms River before moving to Applewood in Freehold about 5 years ago. Ed enjoyed his family and friends and was an expert mechanic/machinist who could fix just about anything.
Ed proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Silent Service, a name often given to submarine service in the Pacific Fleet. After an honorable discharge after the War, Ed worked as a machinist, then as sole proprietor of Highland Service Gulf from 1950-1960 and then at various positions until retiring in 1984 from Hoffman La Roche in Nutley, NJ as a mechanical supervisor.
Survivors include his wife Doris; his daughter Beverly and son-in-law David Vandergoot of Greenlawn, NY, his 2 sons, Edward Jr. and daughter-in-law Jill Nyland of Freehold, and Donald and daughter-in-law Marie Nyland of Clifton; sister, Wilma Oliphant of Wayne; 6 grandchildren Laura Tolle, Sandra Vandergoot, Craig Vandergoot, Carly Fauth, Edward Christian Nyland III, and Paola Velandia; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his 4 brothers, Albert, Howard (Bo), Martin (Bud) and Donald. His good nature and helpful advice will be missed by many family members and friends.
A time of gathering will be held on Monday, November 17 beginning at 11:00AM followed by a funeral
service at 11:30 AM at the Colts Neck Reformed Church on Route 537 in Colts Neck, NJ. There will be a private interment at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Eastern Christian School Association, North Haledon, NJ.
