David was the most thoughtful and kind man I ever knew. When I was a starving student, he gave me work so I could buy a few meals. He was witty and --to compliment his generous soul--he had a most generous mind. I am sure he found great contentment in his marriage, as he found contentment in his art, his music, his teaching and his friendships. I regret the pandemic precluded a celebration of his life; he had an abundance of friends. I miss him every day.

David was wonderful to have as a substitute substitute teacher at High Technology High School, he was kind, understanding and thoughtful. The kids loved him and our world is a better place because of him.

I first first met David in the late 80’s when we were both teaching at St. Peter’s College. It was soon after that we started sharing a studio together in a loft above a local restaurant.
Our teaching schedules were such that we were each able to use the space on different days. I would go in and see a new painting he was working on and he would do the same. We’d talk about them later at times when we were together. We also shared a great enthusiasm for painting outdoors from nature, and would go out together, find a good motif, and set up our portable easels. We would talk of other artists who worked outdoors together, most notably Cezanne and Pissarro. We’d always joke about who of the two we were. I will always remember our camaraderie together. We talked endlessly about light and spots of color, trying to infuse our works with life. I feel fortunate to have know David at such a a pivotal moment in both our lives.
My dear friend David, may God bless and keep you eternally.

David was a lifelong friend of our family - I'm sorry for the loss of your dear friend - Just had to write to tell you how touching and fun it was to read about you and David and picture him and hear him vividly in these times you describe. Smiling through the tears:)

I was very sorry to hear of Uncle Davids passing. The Stehle family was very fond of him, and I remember he liked my daughter Sophia (who was perhaps 6 when he met her) and found her very precocious and clever. He seemed very kind and wise and gentle, and he will be missed.

It is with sadness that I add my memories of David. Paul and I truly loved our wide-ranging and challenging conversations with David. He was thoughtful, provocative, gentle, and a real scholar. I will miss him.

Dave was the quintessential professor. While at ACHS he made Latin come alive for the students. I will always remember the Ides of March and toga festivities. We had a special lunchtime clique and those stories will also be apart of my memory. In Latin I bid there ”Vale”!
