Obituary of Michael Joseph Zappia

Michael J. Zappia, 82, of Freehold, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. Born in Newark, he has resided in Freehold Township for the past 43 years. His parents immigrated from Italy and he and his wife, Loretta moved to Freehold in 1971 to get involved in horse racing. In the 1950's he owned Zappia's Pizzeria in Newark and in the 60's Zappias Bar/Tavern in Newark. He purchased Pinto's Auto Body, Freehold in 1976 and has owned and operated it until retirement. His favorite past time was going to the racetrack, spending time at Pinto's and playing the piano. He was communicant of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Freehold. He was a proud U.S. Army Korean War veteran whose family meant everything to him and he will be missed by all.
He was predeceased by his wife, Loretta. He is survived by his two children and their spouses, Dominick (Guy) and Maryann of Millstone Township and Myra and Scott Kuffner of Manalapan; his sister, Rosie Garguillo of Nutley; grandchildren, Kacey, Scotty and Chelsey Kuffner, Brittney and Morgan Zappia, and Gina Baldachino; and great grandchildren, Lexi and Joseph Baldachino.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Thursday, Oct. 2, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold. Entombment will follow at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Marlboro.
