Obituary of Nathaniel Shaffran

Nathaniel Shaffran, 90, of Freehold, NJ died peacefully on Sept. 27, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Nathaniel was born in the Bronx, NY on April 27, 1924. He graduated from Colgate University, Hamilton, NY in 1949 with high honors. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Colgate University and had additional credits toward an advanced degree from NY University and Hostra College. Mr. Shaffran enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was selected to participate in the Army Specialized Training Program - a unit made up of academically qualified soldiers. He was eventually assigned to the Army Air Corps, serving in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946. He began his teaching career as a high school history teacher, then guidance director, and then as high school principal of Riverhead High School, LI, NY. Mr. Shaffran taught college courses at Southampton College and Dowling College on LI. In 1982 Mr. Shaffran began his affiliation with Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ as administrator and professor. He was instrumental in creating the off-campus program offered throughout Ocean County. For 3 years he was adjunct professor of Western Civilization at the college in 1989. He was selected as employee of the year at Ocean County College, an honor bestowed by his academic peers. Mr. Shaffran is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sylvia; a son, Michael J. Shaffran of Morro Bay, CA; a son, Jonathan J. Shaffran of Alexandra, VA; a daughter, Gwen Komyati and her husband, Joseph of Princeton Junction, NJ; 4 grandchildren, Nikolas Komyati, Daniel Komyati, Rachel Tsvaygoft and Jennifer Shaffran; 3 great grandsons, Nathan and Carter Komyati, and Grant Tsvaygoft A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 12:30 PM, at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold.
