As a child, I had a lisp and when I attended Tisdale elementary school and was assigned to work with Miss Estelle Theander, which was not an easy name to say correctly when you had a lisp.
I remember working with her in her small office and practicing saying "Desks, Tasks, Wasps and her 'Miss Estelle Theander" over and over again until I could say the perfectly (I still struggle with Massachusetts to this day.)
Miss Theander became a familiar and friendly face when she began working at Eric S. Smith Middle School, which was very welcomed by a shy, introverted pre-teen girl.
Of all the teachers I had over the years, Miss Theander stands out strongly in my memory. What a wonderful lady she was.

It was really embarrassing to be called out of class early in third grade to meet Miss Theander. So I tried my best to convince her that my pronunciations were okay fine. But she out-argued me. So every week I saw her through 5th grade. Then she followed me into middle school. Then even into and through high -- 12th grade! In that senior year I sensed a calling to be a pastor. I retired the past spring after preaching about 1500 Sunday sermons, leading several hundred weddings and funerals, lecturing in hundreds more classes and conferences My pronunciations have been okay fine. And my career was impactful. But only because of the relentless persistence of Estelle "The Hound if Heaven" Theander in turning my disability into a asset. In her 80's she somehow met my mom and they became great friends till my mom's passing a few years before Estelle's. Thank God for this great lady.

Estelle lived across the street from me in Ramsey where I grew up, she was also my speech therapist in Tisdale school. I used to take care of her cat sometimes when she traveled and would do yard work for her too (back in the days before internet when kids did more than bury there faces in smartphones) I was just writing my yearly Christmas letter to her when I came across her obituary. She was such a kind and caring person, this holiday season will be even sadder because of this news, you are greatly missed, we will meet again someday, thank you for all your help and kindness. Jeff

I started my teaching career at Smith School in Ramsey in 1980 as a special education teacher. Ms. Theander was the Assistant Principal at the time and assigned to be my “buddy teacher”. What I remember about her is her kindness and care with the more difficult students. As time went on and Estelle retired but still lived in Ramsey, she would always stop by my classroom at Tisdale School to say hello! I always enjoyed hearing about her travels.

I send my love and sympathy. Estelle was an extraordinary educator/Speech Pathologist and woman. Ahead of her time. I was a young therapist in the Oakland Public Schools in 1967 when I met her. I truly wanted to be like her, in every way. She was a role model for me and many of us as the Speech Language field was beginning to bloom. She was a Force of Nature, I called her, with a kind and encouraging way and the best smile ever.
She was revered by Region 1 Speech Pathologist. I will always remember her kindness and bright mind.
My best. Sally Teschon
