Obituary of June Hope Afanassiev

June Hope Afanassiev, 81, Morganville, New Jersey passed away on January 6, 2019 at Genesis Eldercare Center in Eatontown. Born in Newark, New Jersey, June graduated from Benedictine Academy and then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Newark State (now Kean) College.  She was a well known and loved kindergarten teacher in the Old Bridge, New Jersey school district for over 40 years before retiring in 2004.  After several decades in Newark, June lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Chadwick Beach on the Jersey Shore before moving to Morganville, where she resided for 41 years.  June loved sports, and was an early trailblazer for female participation, having played women's college basketball while attending Newark State College in the 1950's.

June was predeceased by her parents Henry and Helen Deiter.  She is survived by her husband Robert of 43 years; daughter Lara and her husband Dimitri; brother Hank and his wife Phyllis Ann; brother Robert and his wife Serena and three grandchildren Preston, Zachary and Joelle. 

Family and friends are invited to gather at Freeman Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00pm.
