EVELYN JENNEY GARDAM, 93, of Freehold passed away Saturday, February 15th, at Applewood Estates in Freehold. Born and raised in Kearny, Evelyn lived in Shrewsbury before moving to Freehold in 1990. The daughter of Edward A. Jenney and Helen Carter Laffey Jenney, Evelyn graduated from East Orange General School of Nursing in 1941 and entered the US Navy Nurse Corps, seeing active duty from 1943 to 1946. She remained in the Reserves until 1951 and was a proud contributor to the Women In Military Service For America Memorial in Washington, DC. Evelyn worked with her late husband, Dr. Joseph W. Gardam, in his practice in Newark for 32 years before they retired in 1973. Evelyn enjoyed her independence and loved being surrounded by family. She was appreciated for her chocolate chip cookies, her knitting for newborns at Centra State Hospital, and her service on the Applewood Residential Council. Evelyn was the calm center of the family as other elders passed. Her thoughtfulness, practicality and kindness were the glue that held the family together through many losses and obstacles. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1984 and by her dear sister Dot. She will be deeply missed by her two grandchildren: J. William Gardam, III (Winter Haven, FL) and Elspeth G. Hohnstine (Bethany Beach, DE), three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, as well as many friends and acquaintances. A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, February 21st at 11am at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Applewood Residents Assistance Fund.
