When I think of Ricky, the word inspiration comes to mind. He was one of the first people outside '02's freshman football team I met at St. John's and from day one you knew he was someone unique and a guy you wanted to be around. We really got to know each other the next summer through all the long hours in the weight room and he became someone I truly looked up to and admired on and off the field. As the oldest in my family, I did not have an older brother to ride on the coat tails of and Ricky became that person for me. I never saw someone work harder, or bring more intensity to a huddle. A few lasting impressions from the St. John's days: The last varsity game our freshman year, Coach Meehan had myself and a few other guys dress for the game as kind of a prep for the next season. We're outside the locker room getting ready to walk down to the field for introductions, and Ricky is power walking in circles around the big pine tree right outside the locker room. He had this look on his face of sheer focus and determination like he was ready to take on the world, and you could see he was mentally prepared for the game to say the least. I remember thinking a combination of, well that's one way to get ready & Vesce is a lunatic!...it was funny and intense all at the same time...if you look today there's probably still a path worn around that tree from Ricky circling it like a mad man. Fast forward to '01's last game their senior year, our junior year...that devastating Pinelands loss. If you were there you remember the locker room was a mess. Hugs and tears were abundant. I remember Ricky coming over and we hugged each other like there was no tomorrow, both crying, and he gave me a kiss on the cheek like us Italian's do, along with an "I love you man". There was nothing more to be said, but I'll never forget it. I think even in defeat that night solidified the brotherhood everyone on those teams would share forever. Lastly, I don't think at the time I really ever had to the guts to wrestle, and somehow he talked me into it. My only thing now is I wish I listened to him 2 years prior and didn't wait so long. It was one of the best things I ever could have done for myself.
I'm grateful Ricky and Jay put together the alumni games the last few years, so we got to take to the field a few more times together and relive some of those Friday Night Light memories afterward. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Allison and the entire Banca and Vesce families, I have no words to express my sorrow for the loss of the nicest guy in the world, Ricky Vesce. Alli,I will never forget the way he gazed at you on your wedding day.
