I just found out that we lost this truly gifted human being. He was my first teacher on the first day of high school at Xaverian. He made quite an impression when he had my entire class for 5 days days in a row, 1000 times write " There is a time for speaking and a time for being still", William Paxton 1685. To this day I can never forget that sentence and can never forget Lenny. He was a true inspiration and I only wish I was able to tell him again what a difference he made in all of our lives. xoxo Rock

I was sadden to hear this morning, of the passing of Mr. D. He was my freshman Biology teacher @ Xaverian in 1974. He was a breath of fresh air & laughter after my other classes. A Genuinely Great Guy. The last time I meet up with Mr D.was in 1980 He came to the Auto Parts on 86th St in Brooklyn, where I was working. He was looking for parts for his beloved Volvo. He had words of encouragement for me, along with a great joke. God rest his soul. I will miss him.

I am sad to hear of Mr Don Diego's passing. My sympathies to his family. "Lenny" was my freshman biology teacher at Xaverian HS way back in 1982. God forbid if I called him Lenny back then. I just remember how funny he was and how at some times I could not catch my breath after hearing one of his jokes or stories. We never dissected anything in his class because as he said he did not trust us with a scalpel! He was too young to leave us but I am sure he making the other angels laugh out loud now in heaven.

Mr. D. you were always, without question, my favorite. When I think of the word "teacher" YOUR name has brought more meaning to that word than anyone else in my entire high school career. Through your stories and experiences I have learned valuable lessons on how to be succesfull in life. More than how to be rich or famous, but how to be happy and to always learn as you go. You helped me to understand that experience was the best teacher and that life is full of challenges. You went beyond your expectations and taught us important life lessons. You've stood out to me.. even back then, as someone who knew what they were talking about, and someone who legitametely wanted the best for us. Beyond grades, or the curriculum, you taugh us that life is not always easy But that your attitude and your approach was what mattered most. I can't thank you enough for everything I have learned from you and my thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends at this difficult time.

"Did you hear the one about...?" For those of us who knew Lenny well, that could be a frightening phrase. You knew there would be a good story at the end, but, "Oh Heavens, what was he about to say?" How often did we have to look around, to see who was within earshot of Lenny's tale? Who might be offended by his story? Could they hear us, as we laughed?
Often these stories would be laced with esoteric historical anecdotes, resulting in a combination of a head scratch and belly laugh. I heard many of these stories while coaching with Lenny for several years. Virtually all of his stories were over the heads of the kids we coached—and that was a good thing!
I spoke with Lenny just days before he passed. It was a rather lengthy chat, given his condition. At times he was winded, but he still had stories to tell. Not jokes, this time. Rather, they were about Patti and Laura and Lenny, and some of the last things they did together.
"Did you hear the one about…Lenny talking about his wife and kids?" (It's a great story!)
