I am the youngest of Uncle Eddies brother Stephens children and was still quite young when the trips to Jersy stopped. However the ones I do have are still memories very vivid to me. Lake Hopatcong as Marty said was quite a trip as it was also my cousin Cathy's and my 8th birthday at the lake. Uncle Eddie tried so hard to get me up on skies that summer but feet to small and skies to big off the end of the dock only ended in comedy for those who watched. Other memories were of Uncle Eddies 1964 GTO ; how awesome, we had a green station wagon but my Uncle had a GTO; pretty cool in a young boys eyes.
Several years ago my girls and I came to New Jersey to visit Uncle Eddie, Aunt Elaine and my fathers widow and what an amazing suprise to us that his children (my cousins) were there that night as well. My children had the chance to meet there Aunt and Uncle and hear some old Donovan stories I fear all all but lost to time now. I am so greatful for that night and for my cousins who have kept me in their lives since that night.
I am so sorry that we can not be their but our hearts are. Our love and sympathy to all.

Uncle Eddie was the youngest of four Donovan children. My father was his older brother
Stephen (Steve). He also had two older sisters Lee and Joan. Sadly, Uncle Eddie is the last of
those four children to pass.
My memories of Uncle Eddie go back to my childhood. My father had moved us to Ohio due
to job constraints and we visited "family" in New Jersey every summer when Dad's plant
did it's summer shutdown. Our visits always included outdoor time with Uncle Eddie and
one of my favorites is of the many hours he spent with us practicing baseball. Playing
catch, fielding flies and ground balls or doing batting practice, Eddie was the soul of
patience. Indeed, even though we called him "Uncle" he seemed more like an older
brother to me. He was, even to our young eyes an extremely talented athlete and it was
never hard for me to pay attention to his instructions and tips!
Back in those days, the Donovan clan would spend a week or so at Lake Hopatkong. Grandpa
Donovan had purchased a speedboat which immediately became a centerpiece of these
getaways. We spent many hours on the Lake with Uncle Eddie taking turns learning how to
waterski. I'm sure that at the end of many of those days we had probably worn Eddie out!
Many times we children would run down to the lake before breakfast to see what was going
on and to check the water conditions. One such morning we went down to the dock where
the speedboat had been left the day before and it wasn't there! Needless to say in our
young minds this was a catastrophe! We ran back up to tell our parents we couldn't find
the boat and they told us to calm down and several of them, including Uncle Eddie went back down to
the dock with us to see what was going on.
We arrived at the dock and it was obvious that the boat wasn't where it had been left
the evening before, but the lines were still tied to the dock and then we noticed a
short aluminum stick with a white light on it sticking out of the water. When we got to
the edge of the pier and looked down we saw the boat completely submerged!
Apparently, the night before when we tied the boat up to the pier, Uncle Eddie (as well
as all of us) had forgotten to replace the drain plugs and overnight the boat had filled
with water and sank. We spent the next couple of hours swimming and walking the boat
over to the ramp where Grandpa Donovan had backed the trailer down into the water so we
could winch the boat up and let it drain!
I remember years later telling this story to a couple of Eddies children. When Eddie
heard what I was telling them he tried to shush me up, but the secret was out!
I know Eddie had that boat for many years after Grandpa Donovan passed away and I'm sure
Eddies family has many fond memories of it as well.

Dear Elaine and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much you and your family have been thru during your husband's illness. I know you were torn as to what decisions you had to make on behalf of your husband, but I feel he made his own decision and relieved you of that burden. May you remember all the wonderful times you had together. My sincerest sympathy, Jean LaBanca.

Aunt Elaine, Joseph, Thomas, James and Lois: Our very deepest sympathies on the passing of Uncle Eddie. Although we haven't gotten back to New Jersey often in recent years, we think of you often and treasure our memories. I remember Uncle Eddie going with us for our first visit to the Empire State building years ago. I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6. He lifted me up so I could see over the security fence which was much lower back then. It was exciting and terrifying all at the same time! Each time I see the NY skyline and the Empire State Building, I remember that day. I also remember Uncle Eddie and Aunt Elaine's beautiful wedding and the gorgeous grounds. I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful location for a wedding. I'm afraid we Donovan kids had a hard time sitting still since the huge grounds were beautiful, but we sure had a good time playing. We were blessed to have Uncle Eddie in our lives and grateful that he was such a wonderful, supportive brother to our Dad. He had the rare gift for always being able to make my Dad smile. I will never forget his kindness in helping paint the house in Morrow after Mom passed. It makes my heart happy to know that the siblings are reunited now. Please know that we wish we could be with you tomorrow, but our hearts, thoughts and prayers most certainly are. Much love, Cate, David, Maria and Patrick Widmann

Thank you for the times we had together and thank you for the things you did for my father after my mother passed away, i.e. painting my fathers house and for the time spent with him.
