Robert 'Rac' A. Cunliffe, 90, of Point Pleasant, passed away on May 25th, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. Rac was a man who wore many hats. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy after being wounded in battle and receiving the purple heart, honorably discharged at the age of 19. He then worked for the Jersey Central Rail Road as a Deckhand on Harbor Tugs from 1949 to 1970, then from 1951 to 1977 he worked for the Jersey City Police Department retiring as a Lieutenant. Rac was a commander of the Mounted Police for 20 years, and he trained and competed in Madison Square Garden numerous times for the Police Department. In 1977 he opened Asbury Auto Supply with his two sons Rod & Tom. He acquired his 100-ton captain's license while at the store, then sold the business in 1986 and ran an off shore tuna fishing charter boat business in Hatteras, NC and Point Pleasant, NJ. He is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline; his five children and their spouses, Robert Cunliffe, Thomas and June Cunliffe, Paul Cunliffe, Lori Cunliffe, and Leslie and Joe Licata; seven Grandchildren; Nicolas Malespina, Jennifer Clayton, Taylor, Robert, Zachery, Casey and Samantha Cunliffe and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial gathering will be held Tuesday, May 31st from 4:00 - 7:00 pm with the Tin Can Sailors providing a Two Bell Ceremony at 4:30 pm at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold.
