Obituary of Alfred Jack Eitelberg
Please share a memory of Alfred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alfred J. Eitelberg, 97, of Howell Township died November 30, 2015, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born and raised in Hillside, NJ, he had resided for over twenty years in South Orange before settling in Freehold Township in 1973 and Howell in 2008. As a young man, Mr. Eitelberg was a gifted athlete, playing three sports at the semi-professional level. He served in the Army, 5th Armored Division, during World War II, suffering a severe back injury that limited his sporting ambitions. After the war, he worked for the New Jersey Tobacco Company, where his friendliness, sense of humor, charm, and tenacity helped make him a topflight salesman extraordinaire. With his wife, Olga, he also owned and operated Town & Country, a dress shop in Maplewood and, later, Korner Gift & Stationery in the Vailsburg community of Newark. He served in the South Orange Police Reserve for many years. He was a district executive with the Boy Scouts of America. After retirement, he enjoyed painting, reading, traveling, socializing with friends at the local senior center, managing a senior softball team, and rooting for the NY Yankees. He credited his longevity to great genes, healthful living, his wife's cooking, and his daughter, Dori, who was a primary caregiver since 2007.
Mr. Eitelberg was predeceased by his beloved wife and constant companion, Olga Eitelberg, to whom he was married for 64 years. Surviving are one son and his wife, Mark and Deborah Eitelberg of Monterey, CA; two daughters, Judith Eitelberg of Miami and Dori Eitelberg of Howell; two grandsons and their wives, Matthew Eitelberg and May Nguyen, and Andrew and Robin Eitelberg, all of New Orleans; and two nephews and their families.
A funeral service will be held at Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan on Thursday, December 3rd, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Entombment will be at 9:00 AM on Friday, December 4th, at Maplewood Cemetery & Chapel Mausoleum in Freehold Township. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to a senior-care charity of one's choice.
