Uncle Walter was a patriot, an animal lover, a family man, Santa Claus, a golfer, a skier, a bowling champ, a painter, a pool shark, a technophile, a photographer, a Brooklyn boy, a story teller, a genealogist and perhaps the most gregarious person I have ever known.
Over the years we have shared many family history treasures that we uncovered in our research. Uncle Walter's most recent gem was a passport photo of our Aunt Margaret that was taken before she returned from Ireland to the US as a teenager. Uncle Walter loved telling stories about his trip to Ireland with Aunt Margaret and about the time he spent in India while he was in the service. He loved road trips too!
A couple of years ago I searched the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Uncle Walter's name and found that in 1935 he won an award at the Flatbush Boys Club Pet Show for having the cat with the largest family - 5 kittens. We joked about how appropriate his claim to fame was. It spoke volumes about him. There was always room in his heart and his home for another pet. Uncle Walter used to bring cats home to his grandmother and coax her into letting them stay for one night because he knew that once the cat was there for one night, the cat would become a part of the family. I don't think Uncle Walter ever met an animal that he didn't like and I think the feeling was mutual. <3
He was dearly loved and will be missed.
